Education Pathway
Apprenticeships combine real work experience with nationally recognised qualifications, all while earning a salary — no student debt required.
An apprenticeship is a real job with training, where your child earns a salary while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. They split their time between the workplace and training (typically 80% work, 20% study).
Unlike university, apprentices don't pay tuition fees or take on student debt. Employers invest in their training, and apprentices earn from day one.
Qualifications
Apprenticeships range from GCSE-equivalent to Master's degree level. Each level offers increasing responsibility, salary, and career opportunities.

Support
Common questions from parents about UK apprenticeships — answered clearly.
Not necessarily. While starting salaries may be similar, apprentices have 3-4 years of work experience by the time graduates enter the workforce. Degree apprentices earn £28,000+ on average, and they've already been promoted while graduates are just starting. Plus, they graduate completely debt-free.
It depends on the level. Level 3 is equivalent to A-Levels, Level 4-5 to an HNC/Foundation Degree, Level 6 to a Bachelor's degree, and Level 7 to a Master's. All qualifications are nationally recognised and valued by employers. Many apprenticeships also include professional certifications.
Absolutely! Completing a Level 3 apprenticeship qualifies your child for university entry. Many apprentices choose to continue to higher apprenticeships (Level 4+) instead, earning a degree while working. Some even progress to postgraduate apprenticeships.
Help them research companies and sectors they are interested in. Review their CV together, focusing on skills they have developed in school, part-time jobs, or volunteering. Practice interview questions. Most importantly, encourage them to apply to multiple opportunities - competition can be high.
Apprentices have the same employment rights as other employees. If it's not working out, they can discuss concerns with their employer or training provider. In serious cases, they can leave and either find another apprenticeship or pursue different education options. Early discussions usually resolve issues.
Yes! Apprentices are employees with contracts, earning at least the National Minimum Wage (£8.00/hour from April 2026 for apprentices under 19 or in their first year). Many employers pay significantly more. They get at least 20% of their time for training, but the rest is productive work with real responsibilities.
