Understanding Child Benefit

Child Benefit is a tax-free payment from the UK government for anyone responsible for raising a child. Over 7.62 million families claim it, making it one of the most widely-received benefits in the UK.

The benefit is paid for each child until they turn 16, or up to 20 if they remain in approved education or training (not university). There is no limit on the number of children you can claim for.

Even if you choose not to receive payments, registering for Child Benefit is crucial for National Insurance credits that protect your State Pension.
