International Primary Science: Living Things, Materials, Forces, and Scientific Enquiry

Pearson Edexcel International Primary Curriculum Science (specification JSC11) introduces primary-age students to the three strands of science — biology, chemistry, and physics — alongside the skills of scientific enquiry. The qualification provides an internationally benchmarked measure of primary science attainment for students in Years 3–6 at international schools. Biology covers the living world: the characteristics of living things (movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition — commonly remembered as MRSGREN), classification of animals and plants, habitats and food chains, the human body (the role of major organs, the skeleton and muscles, nutrition and healthy eating, reproduction at a basic level), plant biology (parts of a plant, photosynthesis at a simple level, the life cycle of flowering plants), and the water cycle. Chemistry explores materials and their properties: classifying materials as natural or manufactured, solid/liquid/gas and changes of state (melting, boiling, evaporation, condensation, freezing), soluble and insoluble materials, mixing and separation methods (filtering, evaporating, sieving), and reversible versus irreversible changes. Students are introduced to the idea that materials are made of very small particles and that the arrangement of particles explains the properties of solids, liquids, and gases at a conceptual level. Physics covers forces (gravity, friction, air resistance, water resistance, magnetic forces), light (reflection, shadows, how we see), sound (vibrations, pitch, volume), electricity (circuits, conductors, insulators), and Earth and space (the solar system, day and night, seasons). Scientific Enquiry develops the skills of planning a fair test, identifying variables, making predictions, recording results, and drawing conclusions — the process of doing science, not just knowing facts.

Mnemonics for Biology, Variable Identification, and Practical Observation Skills

For biology, the MRSGREN mnemonic (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition) is essential — it lists all seven characteristics of living things and is the basis for many exam questions at primary level. Practise applying each characteristic to different organisms: a tree moves (slowly, growing towards light); a mushroom reproduces (by releasing spores); bacteria respire (anaerobically). Being able to identify each characteristic in a less obvious organism separates confident science learners from those who only apply the characteristics to familiar animals. For scientific enquiry questions about fair tests, the key vocabulary is: independent variable (what you change in the experiment), dependent variable (what you measure), and control variables (everything you keep the same). A question asking "how does the height of a ramp affect the speed of a toy car?" has ramp height as the independent variable, car speed as the dependent variable, and the size of the car, the surface of the ramp, and the toy car used as control variables. Naming all three types of variable precisely demonstrates enquiry understanding. For physics topics involving forces, always consider the direction of each force acting on an object. When an object is stationary, the forces must be balanced — the weight downwards equals the normal reaction upwards. When an object is moving at constant speed, forces are also balanced (friction equals driving force). Only when forces are unbalanced does the object accelerate or decelerate.
