Examiner Report
Introductory Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for Entry-Level Science Learners
Pearson Edexcel Entry Level Certificate in Science provides an accessible introduction to scientific knowledge for learners who are working below GCSE standard. The qualification covers the three core sciences — biology, chemistry, and physics — at Entry Level 1, 2, and 3, giving learners a recognised credential that evidences their scientific literacy.
The Science component introduces learners to foundational concepts across all three disciplines. In biology, topics include the characteristics of living things, basic cell structure, food chains and feeding relationships, the importance of adaptation in living organisms, and basic human biology (the skeleton, muscles, and simple organ systems). In chemistry, topics include the properties and classification of materials, the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures, simple chemical changes (burning, rusting, neutralisation), and the states of matter and changes of state. In physics, topics include forces, movement, speed, simple circuits and electrical components, energy sources and transfers, and the properties of light and sound.
The Further Science component extends the coverage for learners who achieve Entry Level 3 in the Science component and wish to demonstrate deeper understanding. It includes topics such as photosynthesis and respiration at entry level, the periodic table and atomic structure (simplified), and more detailed treatment of energy forms and transfers. Assessment combines teacher-assessed portfolio tasks with moderated written assessments, making the qualification accessible for learners who need flexible assessment formats.

⚠️ Edexcel Entry Level Certificate in Science is awarded at Entry Level 1, 2, and 3. Achievement is moderated against Pearson Edexcel standards.
Everyday Scientific Vocabulary, Simple Explanations, and Practical Observation Skills
Entry Level Science rewards learners who can describe scientific processes clearly in their own words and connect them to everyday life. When describing a food chain, make sure the arrow points from the organism being eaten to the organism doing the eating — the arrow shows the direction of energy transfer, not who eats whom. A common mistake is drawing the arrows in the wrong direction.
For materials and states of matter, a reliable revision approach is to group materials by their properties: hard/soft, magnetic/non-magnetic, conductor/insulator, soluble/insoluble. Each property has a practical application — insulating materials are used in electrical wire coverings, magnetic materials in fridge magnets and loudspeakers, conductors in electrical cables. Being able to give one real-world example for each property is typically sufficient at entry level.
For physics topics like circuits, practise drawing simple circuit diagrams using standard symbols (cell, lamp, switch, ammeter). A circuit must be complete (no breaks) for current to flow. Series circuits have components connected in a single loop; parallel circuits have components connected across multiple paths, so that one path can be broken without affecting the others. Understanding why Christmas tree lights with parallel circuits continue to work even when one bulb fails is a useful way to remember the difference.
