Curve

How is the AP Biology exam scored?

Two equal sections combine into one composite, then map to 1 to 5.

AP Biology has two sections of equal weight. Your raw multiple choice count and your rubric scored free response total are each converted to a scaled section score, the two are added into a single composite, and College Board maps that composite to a 1 to 5 grade. The mapping is set fresh every year through a standard setting process that anchors the new exam to prior years, so there is no permanent percentage cutoff. The practical takeaway is that both sections matter equally: a strong multiple choice score cannot rescue an unanswered free response section, and vice versa.

How the AP Biology composite score is built

MC and FRQ each contribute half of a roughly 120 point composite.

The exact scaling changes slightly each year, but the structure is stable and worth understanding before you set a practice target.

Multiple choice (Section I)

60 questions, scored as a raw count with no penalty for wrong answers. The raw count is weighted to contribute half of the composite.

Free response (Section II)

6 questions scored against analytic point rubrics for a raw total around 0 to 36. That total is scaled up to contribute the other half of the composite.

Composite

The two weighted section scores are summed into a single composite on a scale near 0 to 120.

Mapping to 1 to 5

College Board sets composite boundaries for each grade through annual standard setting. As a rough heuristic only, recent years have placed the 5 boundary near the low 70s percent of composite points and the 3 boundary near the mid 40s. Treat these as approximate and year dependent.

What does each AP Biology score mean?

3 or higher is passing; most colleges grant credit at 3, 4 or 5.

ScoreOfficial labelWhat it means
5Extremely well qualifiedEquivalent to an A in the comparable college course. Earns credit at almost every institution that grants AP credit.
4Well qualifiedEquivalent to an A minus, B plus or B. Earns credit at the large majority of colleges.
3QualifiedEquivalent to a B minus, C plus or C. The passing threshold; many colleges grant credit, though selective ones may require a 4 or 5.
2Possibly qualifiedBelow the passing threshold. Rarely earns credit.
1No recommendationNo college credit.

Figures are College Board's global student score distributions, transcribed directly from the official score distribution PDFs. The three year trend is a clear, steady upward shift: the mean rose from 3.04 in 2023 to 3.24 in 2025, the 3 or higher rate rose from 64.4% to 70.3%, and the share of 5s rose from 14.3% to 18.8% as participation grew from about 239,000 to about 288,000 students.

Is AP Biology curved, and how has the curve moved?

Scaled, not capped. The pass rate has risen three years running.

AP Biology is not curved in the sense of limiting how many students can score well. Raw to scaled conversion exists to account for small differences in exam difficulty from year to year, not to ration high scores. The recent trend confirms this: the 3 or higher rate rose from 64.4% in 2023 to 68.3% in 2024 to 70.3% in 2025, and the mean climbed from 3.04 to 3.24 over the same period. Plan for a demanding standard rather than a generous one, but know that strong preparation is reflected in the scores rather than competed away.

How do scoring guidelines help you study?

They are the exact rubric Readers used. Self score against them.

Each year's official scoring guideline lists, point by point, what a response had to contain to earn credit on every free response question. Working a released FRQ under timed conditions and then grading yourself line by line against that guideline is the single highest return practice technique, because it shows precisely where points are earned and lost rather than leaving you with a vague sense of how it went. The sample responses bundled in the scoring materials also show the exact phrasing Readers credit, which is often more specific than students expect.

AP Biology scoring FAQ

How is the AP Biology exam scored?

Section I (60 multiple choice) and Section II (6 free response) each count for half. Your MC raw score and your rubric scored FRQ total are scaled and combined into one composite, which College Board converts to a 1 to 5 grade through an annual standard setting process.

What composite score do I need for a 5 on AP Biology?

There is no fixed cutoff; boundaries are set each year. As a rough planning heuristic only, recent administrations placed the 5 boundary near the low 70s percent of total composite points and the 3 boundary near the mid 40s. Treat these as approximate and year dependent, not a target.

Is the AP Biology exam curved?

Not in the sense of limiting top scores. Raw to scaled conversion accounts for small year to year differences in difficulty; it does not cap the number of 4s or 5s. The 3 or higher rate rising from 64.4% in 2023 to 70.3% in 2025 reflects this.

What does each AP Biology score mean?

5 is extremely well qualified, 4 is well qualified, 3 is qualified (the passing threshold), 2 is possibly qualified, and 1 is no recommendation. Most colleges grant credit at 3 or higher, though selective institutions may require a 4 or 5.

Is a 3 on AP Biology good?

A 3 is the passing threshold and earns credit at many colleges, especially public universities. Highly selective institutions may require a 4 or 5. Use the AP Credit Savings Calculator to check the policy at specific target colleges.

How is the multiple choice section scored?

Sixty questions, scored as a raw count with no penalty for wrong answers, so you should answer every question. The raw count is weighted to contribute half of the composite.

How is the free response section scored?

Six questions are scored against analytic point rubrics for a raw total around 0 to 36. Readers award a point only when a response meets that point's exact requirement, so partial credit accumulates. The total is scaled to contribute the other half of the composite.

Why does the AP Biology curve change every year?

College Board runs a standard setting process each year that anchors the new exam to the difficulty of prior years, so the composite needed for each grade shifts slightly. This keeps a 4 in one year comparable to a 4 in another.

What was the AP Biology score distribution in 2025?

In 2025, 18.8% scored 5, 24.1% scored 4, 27.4% scored 3, 21.1% scored 2 and 8.6% scored 1, out of 288,132 students. The 3 or higher rate was 70.3% and the mean was 3.24.

Where can I find official AP Biology scoring guidelines?

This page links directly to College Board's hosted scoring guidelines for 2019 and 2021 to 2025, plus the official archive for earlier years. Pair each with the matching free response booklet to self score.
