Why these calculators exist

College planning is full of opaque numbers — sticker prices that nobody pays, “average” statistics that apply to nobody, and financial aid estimates that require a spreadsheet to verify. We built these tools because parents deserve transparent math.

Every number on these pages cites its source. Every formula is documented and visible. Where estimates are used, we label them clearly and quantify the uncertainty honestly — because a number without a source is just a guess.

Questions about these calculators

Are these numbers accurate?
Every number on these pages cites its source — a primary government source, official exam board, or documented data set with a retrieval date. Calculators clearly mark which inputs are "verified from primary source" vs. "estimated." Where data doesn't exist or can't be cited, we say so explicitly rather than fabricating it.
How often is the data updated?
We update data files when official sources publish new rates — typically each academic year (July-August for financial aid rates, spring for AP exam fees). Each data point shows its "last verified" date on the calculator page.
Can I trust these for financial planning?
These calculators produce estimates — sometimes very useful ones — but they are not financial advice. For decisions about 529 contributions, loan repayment strategy, or financial aid appeals, consult a certified college financial planner (CCFP) or college advisor.
What if my situation is unusual?
Most calculators include "scenario comparison" features that let you model different assumptions. If your situation has unusual factors (divorce, business income, unusual assets), the estimate may be less accurate — we note these edge cases in each calculator's FAQ.
Do I need to sign up to use these?
No. All 20 calculators are completely free with no sign-up required. Your inputs are never stored — everything stays in your browser session.
Can I share or save my results?
Yes. Every calculator has a "Share results" button that encodes your inputs in the URL so you can bookmark it or share it with your spouse or advisor. You can also download as PDF or print.
Why does Tutorioo offer these for free?
Tutorioo's mission is to make quality education support accessible. Parents who understand the financial landscape make better decisions for their families. We believe transparent, cited calculators are a public good — and parents who use them often become Tutorioo families.
Are these calculators affiliated with the College Board or FAFSA?
No. These are independent tools that use publicly available College Board, NCES, and Department of Education data. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing any government agency or exam board.
What does "EFC" vs. "SAI" mean?
EFC (Expected Family Contribution) was the old FAFSA metric. It was replaced by SAI (Student Aid Index) starting with the 2024-25 award year under the FAFSA Simplification Act. SAI can be negative (down to -$1,500), unlike EFC which floored at zero. We use both terms because many parents still search for "EFC."
How do the AP Credit Savings figures work?
AP credit transfer rates vary by college. The AP Credit Savings Calculator uses average published credit hours per subject and national average tuition rates from NCES. Your child's actual college may award more or fewer credits — always verify directly with the institution.
